Frequently asked questions
How does this dollar inflation calculator work?
Enter a dollar amount, a from year, and a to year. This page is also an inflation calculator by year: equivalent dollars equal amount times CPI in the to year divided by CPI in the from year, using BLS CPI-U annual averages. Math runs in your browser. Nothing is stored.
What CPI series does this dollar inflation calculator use?
This inflation calculator by year uses U.S. CPI-U annual averages from BLS series CUUR0000SA0 (All items, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted, 1982-84=100). The table covers 1913 through 2025. Tallymill is not the BLS.
How is equivalent purchasing power calculated?
Equivalent dollars = amount × (CPI in the to year ÷ CPI in the from year). Cumulative inflation percent is (CPI_to ÷ CPI_from − 1) × 100. Either direction is allowed. The same from and to year returns the original amount and 0% inflation.
When is the CPI table updated?
The static table refreshes each January after BLS publishes a new annual average. 2026 is not selectable until that annual average is published. There is no live BLS request in the browser.
Why is 2025 included if October CPI-U is missing?
BLS monthly data for 2025 is published except October (lapse in appropriations). BLS stated that the 2025 annual average for unpublished-October series is the mean of the 11 published monthly indexes. This table uses that BLS 11-month annual (321.943).
Is this financial, tax, or investment advice? Is Tallymill the BLS?
No. Results are estimates only. This is not financial advice, tax advice, or investment advice. Tallymill is not the BLS and does not recommend products. Confirm figures with your records or a qualified professional.
Do I need an account? Do you store the numbers I enter?
No. The math runs in your browser. There is no signup, and Tallymill does not save your amount or years. Refreshing the page clears the form.
